Evgeny Davydov's stick-smashing, linesman-shoving snit over a
disallowed goal Thursday night in Ottawa's 5-1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins
is under review by the NHL's head office.
Brian Burke, the NHL's vice-president of hockey operations, will look
at a videotape of the incident that occurred with 7:36 left to play in
the game. The NHL did not give a timetable for delivering a judgment, if
any is deemed necessary.
Davydov was handed a 10-minute misconduct and a game misconduct by referee
Ron Hoggarth after he pushed linesman Andy McElmand in frustration.
Replays showed Davydov stop a pass from Troy Mallette with his skate,
kick the puck up to his stick and flick it into the Pittsburgh goal. But
Hoggarth ruled the Senators' winger kicked the puck into the net, which
is illegal.
Burke's review is proceeding under NHL rule 42(B) -- abuse of officials
-- which is good news for Davydov. Under rule 67 -- physical abuse of officials
-- a player is subject to automatic suspensions, ranging from three to
20 games, or more, depending on the infraction.
Davydov had plenty of free time to ponder his fate on Friday, as head
coach Rick Bowness gave his players the day off.
Bowness gave Alexandre Daigle the weekend off, on the theory that the
19-year-old rookie could use a break after 75 games.
"It's more of a mental break than anything, said Bowness. "We want him
to finish the last nine games on a positive note and hope the time off
will help him get some jump back in his legs.
The Senators play the Canadiens in Montreal on Monday, and Daigle, whose
family lives in Laval, will join the club then.
Newcomers Steve Konroyd and Phil Bourque, acquired from the Detroit
Red Wings and the New York Rangers, respectively, returned to those cities
to collect some belongings and to tie up loose ends.
Both will miss Ottawa's workout today, as will rookie centre Alexei
Yashin, also has an extra day off.

WINNIPEG - The Winnipeg Jets have added Russian forward Evgeny Davydov
to their franchise.
General manager Mike Smith learned late Thursday that Davydov had been
released by his employers, Central Red Army.
The development surfaced only hours after Smith had all but given up
hope of landing the talented right-winger. Red Army officials had missed
an ultimatum set by Smith on Wednesday.
According to Smith, Red Army coach Viktor Tikhonov attempted to block
the release of Davydov because the team is in the early stages of its playoffs.
Davydov was a member of the gold-medal-winning Unified Team at the Albertville
winter Olympics. He scored three goals and 11 points at the games.
Details of the deal were not released.
* In Detroit, Viacheslav Kozlov was granted a preliminary ruling by
a county judge yesterday which allows him to join the Detroit Red Wings.
Kozlov had been seeking to be released from a five-year contract with
the former Soviet Red Army team and begin fulfilling a three- year, $750,000
contract with the Red Wings.
Kozlov's lawyer, Michael Lewiston, argued that Kozlov signed the contract
in Russia under duress.
Lawyer Sharon Woods, representing the Red Army team, said the validity
of Kozlov's contract with the Russian team should be decided in Russia.
Judge Sharon Tevis Finch ruled that Kozlov signed with the Russian team
under pressure. She said the NHL should not recognize that agreement and
barred the league from preventing Kozlov from joining the Red Wings. |
