Матч за матчем ST. PAUL, Minn. --- It didn't take long for Zach Bogosian and Arturs
Kulda to be reunited after two seasons as a defensive pairing playing junior
hockey.
Here they are again, but this time it's at the top of their profession.
Kulda made his NHL debut Friday, one day after he was recalled from
the Thrashers' AHL affiliate in Chicago. He again found himself paired
with Bogosian.
"It's a great feeling," Kulda said Friday morning before taking on the
Minnesota Wild. "I've been working hard to one day come here. I'm looking
forward to the game."
Kulda and Bogosian played two seasons (2006-08) in Peterborough. Bogosian
jumped right from the Ontario Hockey League after being drafted in the
first round (third overall) in 2008. Kulda appeared in five AHL games and
the Calder Cup playoffs, under current Thrashers coach John Anderson in
2008. This season he has played 42 games for the Wolves, scoring 15 points
(three goals, 12 assists). He led the AHL in plus-minus rating at plus-35
at the time of his recall.
The reunion was a surprise for Bogosian.
"I'm happy for him," Bogosian said. "He's worked really hard for it.
It's good to see old friends. I didn't know he got called up until [Thursday]
when I saw him in the lobby [of the team hotel]. I got caught off-guard.
I was happy to see him. He's a great kid. He's a lot of fun to be around
for me personally because I played with him before.
"Two years ago we were in Peterborough together battling to get in the
NHL, and now we are both sitting in the same locker room in the NHL. It's
pretty cool."
Kulda's debut came after a whirlwind two days. He was informed of his
promotion at midnight Wednesday, just as he was preparing for bed. He frantically
began to call teammates in search of the phone numbers for the Wolves'
equipment managers. An hour later he was packed, and four hours later he
was up and headed to the airport for an 8 a.m. flight to Minnesota.
Kulda arrived. His equipment did not. He had to watch the Thrashers
practice Thursday. By Friday, he was dressed and on the ice preparing for
his first game. "It was kind of crazy, but really memorable," Kulda said.
Kulda, who wears No. 44, was called up after Mark Popovic suffered an
upper-body injury Wednesday against the Avalanche. Anderson listed Popovic
as "questionable," so the Thrashers needed another defenseman with Christoph
Schubert and Boris Valabik both on injured reserve with knee injuries. |
