LANDOVER, Md. -- One down, one to go.
The Bruins yesterday finally worked out a two-year deal with their No.
1 draft pick, Dmitri Kvartalnov, and the left wing arrived in Boston in
the afternoon and will practice with the club this morning in Wilmington.
Kvartalnov, 26, last year played with the San Diego Gulls of the International
Hockey League, where he tallied 60 goals and 58 assists in 77 games. He
was named the IHL's most valuable player and rookie of the year.
The Hockey News named him Minor League Player of the Year.
Negotiations were long and sometimes strained between the two sides,
with the Bruins concerned that the 5-foot-11-inch, 180-pounder couldn't
transfer his prolific scoring to the NHL level.
An incentive-loaded contract, believed to include a $150,000 signing
bonus and salaries of $250,000 and $275,000, helped bridge the gap. And
it's a one-way deal, meaning Kvartalnov will receive NHL pay regardless
of whether he spends time in the minors.
"We had a lot of conversations in the last 24 hours," said assistant
general manager Mike Milbury. "We went a long way toward the compromise.
It's done; I'm glad it's done. It's a good, fair contract, and there's
room for it to look real jazzy if he succeeds."
Bruins president/general manager Harry Sinden said in his Causeway Street
office that Kvartalnov must have realized the club wasn't going to move
substantially from the offer it made within the last 10 days.
"We'd moved a long way," said Sinden. "And I guess he finally realized
we weren't going to moveany more. I think he got a hell of a deal. We paid
a hell of a lot more than we thought we were going to pay."
Sinden said Kvartalnov hasn't skated for a week, and it is now up to
coach Brian Sutter to determine when the left wing will play his first
exhibition game.
"I'm happy," said Sinden. "I want the chance for it to work. If he didn't
sign and play, we wouldn't have the chance to see how it works and to see
if he can score goals like we think he can. Hey, if he can't hack it in
this league, at least we know it."
Kvartalnov, who arrived at Logan Airport yesterday afternoon after meeting
with his agent in Manhattan, stayed last night at the club's Lynnfield
hotel headquarters with fellow Russian Sergei Zholtok.
The negotiations were so protracted, said Sinden, that "I speak English
with a Russian accent now."
Now that Kvartalnov has been signed, it's likely the Bruins will turn
their attention even more to the one contract problem they have left --
that of free agent defenseman Glen Wesley.
Sinden has said he'd consider allowing an arbitrator to resolve the
situation, if certain dollar limits are imposed. Wesley and agent Rick
Curran had the arbitration option until the July 31 deadline but elected
not to exercise it.
"I talked to Curran {yesterday morning}," said Milbury. "He said he'd
been made aware of the possibility of going to arbitration within certain
parameters. He said he'd entertain an offer. It's up to Harry. What you'd
do is, instead of negotiating salary, you negotiate parameters. It's a
little easier to do. I don't know what they'll do. But there is a glimmer
of hope."

What's wrong with Dmitri Kvartalnov?
Amid rumors yesterday that Kvartalnov was undergoing tests for a suspected
heart problem, the Bruins' first-year left wing arrived at the Garden around
8 last night, said he was feeling fine and could rejoin the team today
after he undergoes a stress test scheduled for this morning at Massachusetts
General Hospital.
Speaking through interpreter George Survillo, Kvartalnov said he experienced
some chest pain during Tuesday night's game. Word in the Boston dressing
room yesterday was that Kvartalnov had also experienced an irregular heartbeat
at Le Colisee and would be tested for a possible heart condition.
"He doesn't know where {the rumor} started," said Survillo after relating
the rumor to Kvartalnov in the radio press box at the Garden. "No doctor
has said that to him. In Quebec, a doctor checked him out right away --
because of the pain -- and the doctor said nothing was wrong with his heart.
If there had been a problem, the doctor said he could hear it."
Assistant general manager Mike Milbury, asked just prior to last night's
game vs. Quebec if Kvartalnov had an asthma problem -- as originally reported
by the club -- or a heart condition, said, "I don't know what he has."
Following the first period, Milbury confirmed that Kvartalnov would
have the stress test today.
"We aren't anticipating that he has a major problem," said Milbury.
Survillo said Kvartalnov may not be suffering from asthma.
"From what I gather, if it is asthma, it's not full-blown asthma," said
Survillo. "It could be something like a bronchial infection. The reason
I say that? Well, there are four types of inhalers, and the one Dmitri
uses would be for a light case of asthma, at most."
Kvartalnov said he was not experiencing chest pain last night, but added
he was having today's medical exam in part to find out if the pain would
return under stress.
"He felt a pain Tuesday night," said Survillo, who was with the club
that night in Quebec. "And now the tests are to determine if the pain was
a muscular thing, or related to his lungs, or related to his heart. Right
now, though, he feels fine -- normal."
Kvartalnov, Boston's first-round pick (16th overall) last June, has
71 points in 70 games.

WILMINGTON -- Dmitri Kvartalnov, man without a team, plugged away here
yesterday morning with the Bruins, a fourth and forgotten forward on an
offensively bereft line that included Brent Hughes, Dave Reid and Glen
Murray.
Only minutes after clearing waivers yesterday noon, unwanted by any
of the National Hockey League's other 25 clubs, Kvartalnov said he would
accept a demotion to Providence, the most likely next stop for the 27-year-old
Russian.
However, as of early last evening, Kvartalnov had not been assigned
to the American Hockey League. In fact, there remained a chance -- though
remote -- that he could suit up tonight when the Bruins face the Vancouver
Canucks at Boston Garden.
"Am I mad?" Kvartalnov said, repeating a reporter's question inside
the Ristuccia Center practice facility. "Yes, a little bit mad. But not
at somebody -- at myself.
"I want to still play in the NHL."
A report in yesterday's Boston Herald suggested that Kvartalnov soon
could be on his way to Sweden as part of a convoluted swap with Djurgarden
that would free highly touted left winger Mariusz Czerkawski to join the
Bruins. However, Boston's chief European scout, Sven Svensson, reached
by telephone in Stockholm yesterday, said the Swedish Ice Hockey Federation
would not allow Kvartalnov to play there this season.
"That's impossible," said Svensson, apprised of the Herald report. "Even
if, say, Djurgarden agreed, the other teams in Sweden wouldn't allow it.
It's different in countries like Switzerland or Germany, but here a player
must be on a team's roster by the end of June. There are no additions during
the season. The way I see it, it's impossible, because of the Swedish Ice
Hockey Federation rules."
Kvartalnov's Boston-based agent, Mark Perrone, long familiar with SIHF
rules, supported Svensson's belief. According to Perrone, Swedish teams
have until June 30, prior to the start of a new season, to place a player
on their roster.
"I'm a bit puzzled how {the Bruins and Djurgarden} would circumvent
that June 30 date," said Perrone. "Those rosters are frozen in Sweden.
And let's suppose they could get around it. It's still not a transaction
that could be made without Dmitri's full consent."
It appears, then, that Czerkawski will remain in Sweden until at least
April 1 and that Kvartalnov will be ticketed for Providence and, eventually,
a trade. Perrone said he talked with a number of NHL clubs both Tuesday
and yesterday, encouraging them to give his client a new chance in a new
city. A couple of obstacles are Kvartalnov's $70,000 waiver price and a
balance of some $250,000 on his $350,000 contract.
"If the Bruins could deal him, and get something back, then it would
be a win-win situation," said Perrone. "It's obvious that he doesn't fit
in their plans here. He's become a round peg in a square hole."
The Bruins' first-round pick in the 1992 draft, Kvartalnov opened the
1992-93 NHL season as an offensive sensation. He batted in 22 points in
his first 14 games, riding right wing on the club's Bonanza Line with rookie
Joe Juneau and Adam Oates. By November '92, though, his scoring touch was
fading, and he collected only 29 points over the final half of the 84-game
season -- boom to bust over the course of six months.
This season Kvartalnov has been used sparingly, contributing but four
goals in his part-time role. He has hardly been alone at the bottom of
Boston's scoring barrel. His linemates yesterday, Reid, Hughes and Murray,
are responsible for only six goals this season. None have more than three
goals -- one fewer than Kvartalnov.
"It's not a one-year thing with Dmitri," said coach Brian Sutter. "Last
year he opened on a roll, had a lot of goals and he never came back."
Meanwhile, the Bruins, fresh from their 8-1 and 3-1 weekend whippings
at the hands of the Canadiens and Sabres, respectively, have a large group
of forwards who pose little, if any, offensive threat. Reid, Hughes and
Murray are three. Ted Donato, Steve Heinze, Steve Leach, Cam Stewart and
Sergei Zholtok are five more. Jozef Stumpel showed some promise, faltered
and last week was demoted to Providence.
Once past the likes of Juneau, Oates, Cam Neely and Bryan Smolinski,
it's a group of forwards not unlike the relief corps in Tampa, Miami, Anaheim
or San Jose. Three or four forwards carry the show, with captain Ray Bourque
supplying a booster shot from the rear. When the big boys are contained,
there's little threat that the second, third and fourth lines can offer.
Why are they still in the hunt in the Northeast Division? One line, dependable
defense and reliable to impressive goaltending.
For now, Kvartalnov doesn't factor into the equation.
"I think I can play," said Kvartalnov. "But I don't know . . . if no
one wants me."
Kvartalnov's best friend is New Jersey forward Valeri Zelepukin, who
grew up with him outside Moscow in Voskresensk. The Devils could be a nice
fit. Another potential new home could be San Jose, where the Sharks have
spiced their roster with Russians Igor Larionov (also from Voskresensk)
and Sergei Makarov. Highly touted Viktor Kozlov, still in Russia, was the
Sharks' top pick last June.
"I'd like to play here," said Kvartalnov, likely the subject of trade
talks today in California, where Bruins boss Harry Sinden is attending
the NHL's annual Board of Governors meeting. "If now I get chance in minors,
hard work . . . maybe show teams. Some chance?"
