Матч за матчем Пресса:
The Thunder's undermanned defensive corps received a boost Tuesday when
Las Vegas signed highly regarded Denis Tsygurov to a 25-game tryout contract.
The 6-foot-3, 230-pound Russian was a second-round selection of the
Buffalo Sabres in the 1993 NHL Entry Draft. He played for the defense-rich
Long Beach Ice Dogs earlier this season, collecting a goal and four assists
in 15 games while going minus-5.
He has shown flashes of brilliance and at one time was regarded as a
can't-miss NHL prospect, but his performance hasn't matched his potential.
But Las Vegas is strapped for defensemen and was willing to gamble that
it could harness Tsygurov's immense potential.
"He has lots of talent, but somewhere along the line he went from being
an NHL player to a guy who has had trouble finding a home in this league,"
Thunder general manager Bob Strumm said. "We've had great success with
those types of players, and considering our situation on defense, he's
going to get every opportunity to play for us."
Defense has been the Thunder's weak spot all season, and it was hampered
recently by injuries. Sergei Yerkovich (shoulder) and Radoslav Suchy (broken
right hand) each have missed the last three games because of injuries.
Yerkovich, who is one of the team's best players, is expected to return
to the lineup in time for Friday's game in Winnipeg against the Manitoba
Moose. Suchy is out until after Christmas, and the Thunder was reluctant
to leave for a month-long road trip a defenseman short.
Tsygurov had a 25-game tryout with Long Beach that expired. The Ice
Dogs have what is generally regarded as the deepest, most talented defense
corps in the International Hockey League and, despite recent injuries,
coach John Van Boxmeer wasn't able to find enough playing time to keep
all of the defensemen happy.
Long Beach didn't re-sign him when the 25-game pact expired, paving
the way for the Thunder.
"He's a big guy with lots and lots of skill, and if we could ever find
the key that unlocks the vault with all of that skill in it, look out,"
Strumm said. "He was by far the best guy available out there, and we felt
he fit our needs just about perfectly."
Strumm said he was just about certain he would recall right wing Andrei
Bashkirov from the Fort Wayne Komets and have Bashkirov meet the team in
Winnipeg. The Thunder had loaned Bashkirov to Fort Wayne with the intention
of allowing the Komets to evaluate him before making a trade.
The Komets like Bashkirov and want to keep him, but the sides have been
unable to make a deal. However, Strumm said Tuesday there was still a chance
a deal could get done. He said Fort Wayne has a forward he wouldn't name
whom the Thunder would take for Bashkirov, but he isn't optimistic.
"This is kind of an 11th-hour thing, and I'm not really sure anything
will come of it," Strumm said. "But if they want to keep Bashkirov, that
would be a way to get it done."
Strumm said the team was also interested in signing free-agent right
wing Jamie Linden, the brother of Vancouver Canucks captain Trevor Linden.
Jamie Linden, 6 feet 3 inches and 190 pounds, played for Grand Rapids last
year and had eight goals and 138 penalty minutes in 48 games, but has not
played this season. |
