Сезон 1995-96 гг провёл в юниорской лиге Онтарио. С 1996-97 гг играл в Западной Хоккейной Лиге. С 1998 по 2003 гг играл в АХЛ за "Сент Джонс Мэйпл Лифз". Лучший сезон в 1999-2000 гг - 14 очков (1+13) в 64 матчах. 

Первый матч в НХЛ сыграл 29 ноября 1999 года против Вашингтона. В 2001-02 гг вернулся на Украину, выступал за киевский "Сокол" и за донецкий "Донбасс". Сезон 2002-03 гг разделил между АХЛ ("Сент Джон Мэйпл Лифз") и второй командой ярославского "Локомотива". 

Всего в АХЛ 209 игр, 6 заброшенных шайб, 21 результативная передача. 

В 2003-04 гг  и в 2005-06 гг играл в Дании, с 2006 по 2008 в чемпионате Белоруссии. Сезон 2008-09 провел в высшей лиге чемпионата России в составе киевского "Сокола".

Dmitri Yakushin has exceeded expectations this season, partly because he has been a solid player and partly because the expectations weren't very high to begin with.

The 20-year-old Russian defenceman entered the season no higher than seventh on the depth chart for the St. John's Maple Leafs, but injuries forced him into a more prominent role and he responded nicely.

Baby Leafs coach Al MacAdam has no problem having him play in the top four, which is exactly what Yakushin did recently when the Leafs were besieged by injuries on the blue line.

However, Yakushin's play has allowed MacAdam to move tough guy Shawn Thornton up to forward.

Enforcers who are defencemen are often converted into wingers to minimize their defensive liabilities.

"(Yakushin) has played with some poise since he has been here and he's very strong on his skates," MacAdam said. "His decisions, especially down low in our end, have been very good. He seems to have a good sense of when to carry the puck and when to dish it off."

He's not considered a top-four blue-liner at the NHL level if he makes it that far, but Yakushin contributes solid, if unspectacular play. He had one assist and led the Baby Leafs at plus-3 on a team that has hit some hard times.

MacAdam would like to see Yakushin attack forwards more at his own blue line and get a little more physical. And like many 20-year- old rookie pros, Yakushin lacks the consistency of effort.

"He has to close the gap a little better," MacAdam said. "He often backs in too much and uses the goalie as a safety valve.

"And he has to realize the importance of coming to work every day and working on his game."
