The St. Louis Blues have received great play from a number of players despite an overall slow start to the season and Ivan Barbashev has been at the center of it. Ivan Barbashev was a second-round pick by the St. Louis Blues in the 2014 NHL entry draft. He cracked the NHL roster in the 2016-2017 season, playing in 30 games and registered 12 points and five goals. He was able to stick in the NHL a little longer the following year, playing in 53 games but only registering 13 points last year. Barbashev has had trouble cracking the Blues forward lines consistently but he has played well enough so far this season to stick around all year. Barbashev has been a key part in the Blues success on the penalty kill and has played well enough on the fourth line to warrant his sticking around in the lineup. Ivan is averaging 10:30 TOI and while that is not among the team leaders, he plays important minutes for St. Louis. The penalty kill for the Blues is ranked 11 in the league as of October 23 and although it does not rank in the top 10 in the NHL, the kill has been one of the Blues strengths this season. Only Alex Steen averages more time on the powerplay (2:57) among wingers than Barbashev (1:37). Unfortunately for Barbashev, this usually means that his line will be skipped and his 5 on 5 play will diminish. Speaking of his 5 on 5 play, among the players to play in all eight games for the Blues this season, Barbashev ranks last in average time on ice. Early on this season, the young forward has one goal (on an empty net shorthanded goal) and two assists. Early on in his career, Barbashev has shown flashes of big offensive potential and with the way he has played this year on the fourth line, don’t be surprised if he gets promoted to one of the top three lines. It would be nice to see Barbashev on the score sheet more regularly, but the production he is giving the Blues both on the fourth line and the powerplay seems irreplaceable at the moment. |
