Bryzgalov thanks Snider on way out the door // Tribune Business News

June 27--One day after he twice hung up the phone in a conference call with reporters who wanted to discuss his buyout, free-spirited goalie Ilya Bryzgalov issued a news release through his agent, thanking the Flyers; fans; and, especially, Ed Snider, chairman of the club's parent company, Comcast-Spectacor.

Bryzgalov, 33, was bought out of the final seven years of his nine-year, $51 million contract on Tuesday. He will be paid $23 million over the next 14 years.

By the time he stops receiving checks, he will receive a little more than $39 million for two years of work with the Flyers. During that time, he went 52-33-10 and had a 2.61 goals-against average and a .905 save percentage.

"As my family and I move forward to meet the new challenges ahead, I could not leave Philadelphia without publicly thanking Mr. Snider for the faith he showed in me when he committed to the long-term contract that has secured my family's financial future and acknowledging his passion for the game of hockey," Bryzgalov said in the statement.

Bryzgalov, who can become an unrestricted free agent on July 5, thanked his teammates, management, and the fans "for the support I felt from so many of them through some very dark days and difficult situations" and said he made many friends here.

Known for his quirkiness more than for his goaltending, Bryzgalov said he appreciated his two-year experience in Philadelphia "more than many of you will know. I will learn from it. I have always said that a heavy sword makes a very strong arm. I intend to take this experience with me to my new team, to help me be stronger -- a better player and, hopefully, a better person. At the end of the day, that is the challenge we all need to wrestle with."

Snider also issued a statement, saying he supported the buyout, even though it was a "very difficult decision from a financial standpoint. . . . We now have cap space, which will allow us to improve our team.

"In the meantime," Snider added, "Bryz can try to find a situation where he can achieve true happiness."

Bryzgalov's agent, Ritch Winter, said the goalie will not make any further comments until training camp.

The question is, will his training camp be in the NHL or in Russia's KHL?
