Bure continues to impress Quinn // Toronto Sun
By LANCE HORNBY -- Toronto Sun
When Quinn ran the Vancouver Canucks in the 1990s, it was the best of times and worst of times with the Russian Rocket.
Bure scored 60 goals in each of the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons, and helped the Canucks to within a game of the Stanley Cup in 1994. But Bure eventually forced the Canucks to trade him south, and the Florida Panthers acquired him in a one-sided deal on Jan. 17, 1999.
Quinn had moved on to Toronto after the 1997-98 season, but the Maple Leafs general manager/coach couldn't hide his admiration as Bure nearly destroyed the Leafs in the first half of Toronto's 5-3 win last night. Bure scored his 52nd, 53rd and 54th goals of the season.
"He's a great athlete," Quinn said. "I love watching him. I loved having him on my team. I didn't like watching him much tonight, though."
The Leafs' patchwork defence made it easy for Bure at times. But Wade Belak and Aki Berg might not be in the lineup come playoffs, with a healthy Dave Manson in the wings and Danny Markov hoping to come back soon.
But when the forechecking Leafs couldn't get a handle on Bure, it was tough to stop him.
"If there's any sort of (turnover) up ice, he anticipates it and gets up to 60 (miles an hour) faster than anyone in the league," Quinn said. "We want to pick him up a bit, because he curls behind his defence and builds up his speed."
Bure is just four goals away from equalling his 58-goal total from last season, which earned him the 1999-2000 Maurice (Rocket) Richard Trophy.
With Bure in on 11 of the past 12 Panthers goals, coach Duane Sutter wants to see his team's production spread around.
"We're hoping Denis Shvidki and some kids can contribute," Sutter said.
