Bure combo will be great ... especially in Florida //"Sun-Sentinel"

SUNRISE -- As newly acquired Panthers winger Valeri Bure sees it, hes finally going to really get to know his brother.

Valeri and Pavel are close, and when given the opportunity, they spend time together during the offseason.

But hockey, the gift that has brought them fame and fortune, has kept them apart most of their lives.

In Russia, Pavel was mostly away playing for Red Army, and when the two came to North America in 1991, they were immediately separated.

Pavel headed to Vancouver, Valeri to Spokane.

Montreal then drafted Valeri, so we were a continent apart. Finally Im traded to Calgary, and Im thinking were going to see each other all the time, Valeri said. He was super-excited. Hes like, On days off, well hook up. Its only an hour flight between Calgary and Vancouver.

But then he held out and was traded to Florida. So this is going to be extremely cool.

Saturdays trade, which brought Bure and Jason Wiemer for Rob Niedermayer and a draft pick was a deal in the works for 1 years. Former General Manager Bryan Murray tried to get it done and Bill Torrey after him.

Pavel, reached in Moscow, said the rumors were something he and Valeri talked about, but they didnt want to get their hopes up.

We kept on hearing he was coming, he was coming, but if he didnt come, we didnt want to be disappointed, Pavel said. I only wanted to believe it when it happened. And it finally happened.

Valeri, his wife, actress Candace Cameron, and their two children came to visit Pavel in Miami after the season. They spent 10 days with him and just had a blast. I even said, This would be awesome if we could play together here.

Pavel said: Even though we lived on different sides of the world, we still talked all the time on the phone. Its great for me personally, but its good for the team too. Hes a really good player. Anybody who can score 30 or 35 goals in this league is a good player.

Its going to be a good mix. Its going to be great to play for the same team, especially in Florida. Its one of the best places to play hockey great fans, great organization, great weather. It just cant get any better.

Valeri played his best hockey under former Calgary coach Brian Sutter, so he was looking forward to seeing how things go with Panthers coach Duane. He likes the Sutter style of motivation.

If youre not playing well, theyll just tell you that You were absolutely horse----, Valeri said.

They scream and yell; at least Brian did. I dont mind that. Id rather have an honest and open coach than one who doesnt say a thing to you.

While the Bures share talent on the ice, theyre different off of it.

Pavel is in the spotlight, parties on South Beach, spends his summers in Moscow and is single. Valeri lives a more private life and is a much more reserved family man.
