All signs point to Alex Burmistrov returning to NHL where Jets hold his rights

All signs point to Alex Burmistrov returning to the NHL next season.

Whether or not he'll be back with the Winnipeg Jets or be traded away remains a mystery.

Burmistrov, chosen eighth overall by the Atlanta Thrashers in the 2010 NHL Draft, spent the past two seasons in the Kontinental Hockey League with his hometown team, Ak-Bars Kazan.

The versatile forward recorded 20 goals and 63 points in 107 games over two seasons, adding one goal and six points in 23 playoff games.

Burmistrov, 23, had 23 goals and 58 points in 194 NHL games over three seasons with the Thrashers and Jets.

Unhappy with his role with the Jets under head coach Claude Noel, Burmistrov signed a two-year contract that has now expired.

Burmistrov's desire to return to the NHL is nothing new, but the latest development came this week as Ak-Bars teammate Evgeni Medvedev (a defenceman who signed with the Philadelphia Flyers earlier this week) told Russian media outlet sport.business-gazeta.ru that Burmistrov “will also leave the KHL for Canada.”

Jets head coach Paul Maurice has spoken extensively about how his own experience coaching for one season in the KHL gave him a better understanding of Russian players, so perhaps the organization believes Burmistrov can return to North America and reach the potential that made him a high first-round pick.

Burmistrov is a restricted free agent and trying to come to terms on a contract appears to be the next step in the process.

If that becomes a stumbling block, Burmistrov could always be moved to another organization for an asset.
