Little progress in Datsyuk talks - Detroit Free Press

BY KRISTA LATHAM

Ken Holland spoke to Pavel Datsyuk on the phone this week, the first time the two had conversed one-on-one since May.

Good sign, right?

Well, it seems the short conversation Tuesday was just a baby step; it did little to move the two sides -- the Red Wings and their restricted free-agent forward -- closer to a contract agreement.

"We don't seem to have any traction," Holland said Thursday. "But we're prepared to negotiated a contract that I believe is fair."

A report this week said that Datsyuk's agent, Gary Greenstin, wanted framework for a deal in place with Detroit by Thursday, or his client would commit to his Russian club team, Moscow Dynamo. Greenstin is with Datsyuk in Russia this week.

But Holland said Thursday that he wasn't made aware of any self-imposed deadline, and as far as he knew, Datsyuk hadn't signed with Dynamo.

"I know they told me they'd like a deal in place in early September," Holland said, "but that's it."

Either way, there's still time. The Wings don't leave for training camp in Traverse City until Sept. 11, camp doesn't open until Sept. 13, the season doesn't start until Oct. 5 and the NHL doesn't require teams to sign their restricted free agents until Dec. 1.

Though Dynamo, as part of the Russia league, wants its contracts in place by Monday, Datsyuk could sign with the team and opt for a deal that includes an out clause, which would release him from that contract to sign with an NHL team.

So the only real deadline is Dec. 1.

"I think, from my perspective, Pavel has to make his decision," Holland said.

"I have made very real, very substantial offers. I know Pavel has an opportunity to play in Russia, and I don't know what they're paying, so I don't know what I'm negotiating against. I don't feel I should negotiate against it anyway."

Holland has offered deals of one, three, four and five years to Datsyuk, while staying away from two-year deals. Datsyuk would be an unrestricted free agent in two years.

"But if the numbers made sense on a two-year deal," Holland said, "I'd do it."

As for Henrik Zetterberg, another young, restricted free-agent forward, Holland said he and agent Mark Levine spoke over the weekend and had been sending each other offers for short-term deals throughout the week. They talked again Thursday.

"I think we're just trying to figure out what's fair," Holland said. "I don't think we're any closer with him. It's similar to Pavel. It's a process, and both are good young players."
