Playoffs mean it's showtime for Sergei

By the time he had finished with the Kings, Sergei Fedorov had unleashed five shots on their goaltender, created opportunities out of nothing while playing even better defensively, and set up two power plays for his teammates.

The goal that provided the Red Wings' 2-0 victory was just a last-minute punch in the Kings' gut.

Though the net was empty by the time he scored with 13 seconds left, Fedorov had to weave between Jozef Stumpel and Bryan Smolinski before getting his shot off to end a terrific personal effort. He played a key role the entire game in getting the puck out of the Wings' zone.

"He was strong all the way through carrying the puck," coach Scotty Bowman said. "That's what he can do. He's so good defensively you can't use him enough."

With captain Steve Yzerman out with flu, Bowman relied on Fedorov for 21:28 minutes, the most of all forwards. He ate up time five-on-five, killed penalties, and helped on every power play.

Fedorov took his first shot at Stephane Fiset about three minutes after the puck had been dropped, though he was unable to get much force behind it.

Fedorov served up a highlight a little later when he skated into L.A.'s zone and dropped a pass between his legs to Steve Duchesne. That forced Brad Chartrand to chase Duchesne and attempt to stop him with some heavy-handed stickwork, giving Detroit its first power play.

The Kings' frustration with Fedorov only grew in the second period. He got his team its third power play halfway through after Mattias Norstrom upended him behind L.A.'s goal.

"I like to keep that sort of shape and attitude, and keep playing as well," Fedorov said. "But it's not going to be an easy road to play that way every game, I have to work hard for it. I have to stay focused."

That seemingly has not been a problem over the past month. He finished the regular season with 10 points in eight games, four of which were multiple-point efforts. Martin Lapointe and Kris Draper were his wingers down that stretch, but Draper has since moved back to center.

Fedorov's wingers Thursday night were two of the toughest Wings, Tomas Holmstrom and Darren McCarty, and they created a lot of room for Fedorov to work his magic. The line burst with energy, speed and muscle.

"Sergei's been skating really well and shooting more," goaltender Chris Osgood said. "He's going to the net like he used to and shooting more, and when he does that, defensemen tend to back up on him more and the ice opens up for him. We need him to play really well for us to have a shot."
