Fedorov is a veteran presence // The Detroit News

Former Red Wing has 26 assists this season while trying to teach a young team how to win.

COLUMBUS -- The sweater looks a little strange on him, just as it did when he wore the Anaheim Mighty Ducks logo before coming to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

But, Sergei Fedorov said Thursday, he feels at home and enjoys being a veteran on a young, improving Blue Jackets team.

"I'm hoping I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing here," said Fedorov, who had an assist in Thursday's 7-4 Wings victory. He has 26 points this season.

"I feel good about that since I came here. It's fun to play here with young guys and watch how they grow and play well, and remind me of my heydays when I was as young as they are."

Fedorov, along with the rest of the Blue Jackets, seem revitalized since Columbus general manager Doug MacLean replaced Gerard Gallant as head coach with Ken Hitchcock.

Hitchcock, who won a Stanley Cup with the Stars, seems to have gotten the respect and attention of everyone in the organization.

Fedorov, 37, isn't committing to playing after next season.

"It's a different league, a lot of young players coming up, they're younger and faster and it's not as easy to keep up with them sometimes," Fedorov said. "You have to look at all the obstacles. It's a matter of staying in shape and competitive and keeping your mind fresh for the games."
