Fedorov finances closed TV system at kids' hospital // Detroit Free Press

BY HELENE ST. JAMES FREE PRESS SPORTS WRITER
Sergei Fedorov beamed, then explained himself. Of course he didn't really get just one toy every 10 years when he was a child, but ...well, it was close.

These days, he knows how much more satisfying it is to give.

Fedorov, the Red Wings' All-Star center and leading scorer, has financed a closed-circuit system room at Children's Hospital in Detroit. He will attend an opening ceremony Dec. 21, simultaneously participating in the hospital's annual "Snow Pile" program, which provides presents for children hospitalized during the holidays.

"It's very interesting for me, this closed-circuit room," Fedorov said Tuesday. "Rather than just dump the money to the hospital and let management decide what gets built, I talked to a few supervisors and they said this would not be a bad idea.

"I wanted to do something that would be exciting for the kids. I hope they will like it."

The system will, for example, permit events that take place in hospital activity rooms to be telecast live to children who are unable to leave their beds.

There also will be movie channels available and video games.

Mike Liut, Fedorov's agent, estimated the room cost at approximately $15,000, and another $10,000 was spent on buying presents for the "Snow Pile."

The money came from the Sergei Fedorov Foundation, a charity Fedorov created with a $2-million base almost two years ago.

"When I first started my foundation, I was not very much sure what I should do," Fedorov said. "It was very much a learning process. Now I feel great I am able to see the difference I can make with kids and at hospitals."

This fall, Fedorov's foundation sent a student to Central Michigan University. Last spring, it provided $125,000 in hockey equipment to needy children in Moscow. Together with former Red Army goaltender Vladislav Tretiak, now a consultant with Chicago, Fedorov is sending a dialysis machine to Morozov's Children Hospital in Moscow.

"It's really a very wingy feeling," Fedorov said. "I feel like I'm flying high, you know? I feel very, very fortunate to be able to help. I like to be involved and give something back, and it seems to me kids are fun.

"I remember my childhood, if I got one toy for 10 years, I was so happy. What? You don't believe me? OK, that was figuratively speaking. But basically that was it, because my parents couldn't just find a store and go buy a toy. They were very limited, not like here. This is a great country, no?"

That reminded Fedorov, who turns 31 today, of something else he will do Dec. 21 that's pretty special.

"I take my oath to become U.S. citizen," he said, then smiled sheepishly as he described taking the prerequisite test. "I didn't know who is the governor of Michigan. I just kept answering, Dennis Archer. Dennis Archer. Dennis Archer. I passed, yes. Got eight out of 10 right."

That's better than one toy out of 10 years, anyway.
