Penguins lose defenseman Gonchar to Ottawa // Tribune Business News Defenseman Sergei Gonchar is an Ottawa Senator. Gonchar's five-season run with the Penguins ended today when he signed a three-year contract with Ottawa for a total of $16.5 million, an annual salary-cap hit of $5.5 million. Canada's TSN first reported the deal, but his agent confirmed it to the Tribune-Review at 12:23 p.m. via e-mail. The contract includes a no-trade clause. Gonchar was the Penguins' top defenseman the past five seasons. He also ran their power play. He was never close to re-signing with the Penguins, though general manager Ray Shero and his agent JP Barry were speaking up until the start of NHL free agency at noon today. Gonchar, 36, sought a three-year deal with the Penguins, who were not willing to go beyond two years. Barry said Gonchar would take a two year deal, but not without a raise on his previous $5 million salary. The Penguins are hoping to sign defenseman Dan Hamhuis, who has hit the market. Hamhuis, 27, was acquired last Friday for a 2011 third-round pick from Philadelphia. His agent, Wade Arnott, said Hamhuis will keep the Penguins in mind during talks with other teams.
