Wild Superstar Kirill Kaprizov Continues To Display Complete Package

Kirill Kaprizov has already transformed the Wild and there's reasons to believe the organization hasn't even seen his best

Welcome to the offseason series where we will look at each player’s impact this past season, what their future in Minnesota looks like and what to expect in 2023-24.

When Jonathan Marchessault talked with reporters earlier this month about the impact of Jack Eichel during the Vegas Golden Knights' Stanley Cup run, he raved about how well-rounded of a player Eichel is.

"A complete package," Marchessault told them. "He's a force offensively, but he also does a good job defensively. ... He just does it all for us."

Who does that also sound like?

None other than Kirill Kaprizov, the superstar winger who has transformed the Minnesota Wild and broken numerous franchise records in the process in his first three years in the league.

Kaprizov saw his production slightly dip this season and didn't have the playoff showing he wanted to. But let's face it, he doesn't have the high-end talent support other top players in the league do.

Anyways, Kaprizov remains a force to be reckoned with as he continues to display he's a "complete package" player like Eichel, too, even though Eichel is a center. Whether it's Kaprizov's uber-talented skating ability and edge work or his imposing playmaking ability, or his dangerous and accurate release, of course, it sure seems like the former fifth-round pick is only scratching the surface of his potential as he continues to find new ways to impress.

Unlike some top players and something Kaprizov shares with Eichel, the Wild's most valuable player isn't limited to making an impact in the offensive zone.

In fact, he defends better than most. While he has been above average defensively since he entered the league, Kaprizov made even more strides in the defensive zone last season. His 2.33 expected goals against per 60 rate in all situations ranked 24th among forwards in the league who played a minimum of 500 minutes. And he tied for the 73rd highest even strength defensive goals above replacement in the league at 2.4, which didn’t fall too far behind Joel Eriksson Ek.

The fact that Kaprizov can play a 200-foot game, while still being among the NHL’s premier offensive players, makes him even more of a dangerous player. If Kaprizov continues to drive success on both ends, there’s even more reason to believe the Wild still haven’t seen him peak.

Which is difficult to imagine just because of how dominant he's been since coming to North America. The newly turned 26-year-old brought thrill to Minnesota in his rookie year and set the single season franchise records in goals (47) and points (108) in his sophomore season. Despite a slight fall in points, this past season ended up being no different for the Wild’s superstar who once again showcased why he’s among the most upper-echelon players in the league.

Kaprizov has three years left on his contract at an annual price tag of $9 million, which is good news for the Wild. He has produced at a 1.15 point-per-game clip with 234 points through his first 203 games, making his contract a bargain.

This past season wasn’t Kaprizov’s best, although part of his dip in assists and points from 2021-22 could be attributed to the top line not having as strong of a year and Ryan Hartman’s regression in the goal department (34 to 15).

And although Kaprizov played well in the playoffs, the Wild needed more than one power play goal out of him if they were ever going to beat the Dallas Stars. Though it should be considered that Kaprizov returned from injury with just two regular season games left, so he didn’t have much runway to get back into game action heading into the playoffs.

Still, Kaprizov remained the Wild’s most valuable forward at 2.1 wins above replacement (down from 3.8 in 2021-22) last season. It’s also important to note that his pace over a full 82-game season remained steady with 49 goals (which would be his career high) and 92 points had he not been sidelined due to an injury he sustained in early March.

What’s more is he broke more franchise records, scoring goals in seven straight games and points 13 games in a row.

Kaprizov finished 14th in on-ice Corsi for % (63.10), 20th in expected goals for % (64.92) and 24th in goals for % (65.33) in all situations league wide among forwards who played a minimum of 500 minutes last season. That's not too shabby for the superstar who didn't get on the scoresheet quite as often as he the year before.

Kaprizov also drove the Wild’s success on the top line, where the trio of him and Hartman and Zuccarello finished the season with 57.2% of the expected goal share.

The major question heading into next season will be what the top line looks like. Will the Wild keep the status quo of Kaprizov, Hartman and Zuccarello together, or will the first line look different in 2023-24?

Regardless, the Wild are going to need Kaprizov more than ever next season with the number of anticipated offseason departures coming this summer due to the team's number of UFA's but limited cap space.

Aaron’s 2023-24 Kaprizov prediction: 46 goals and 44 assists for 90 points

Dylan’s 2023-24 Kaprizov prediction: 42 goals and 46 assists for 88 points
