Khudobin under microscope

АNAHEIM With Frederik Andersen proving himself in goal last season and John Gibson eager to put up a challenge for the No. 1 job, it would appear the Ducks have no need for Anton Khudobin.

But the 29-year-old Kazakhstan-born is the expected backup to Andersen, and has the distinction of being the highest paid of the three for the 2015-16 season, earning $2.25 million.

Khudobin stopped 23 shots in a sharp preseason debut and Corey Perry's power-play goal with 7:37 left in the third period lifted the Ducks to a 2-1 comeback win over the Sharks at SAP Center on Saturday. Chris Wagner started the rally by scoring on an odd-man rush, beating former Kings goalie Martin Jones at the 3:03 mark of the third.

Khudobin's NHL resume is a 41-36-8 record with a 2.40 goals-against average, .919 save percentage and four shutouts with Minnesota, Boston and Carolina.

One big reason why they got him from the Hurricanes to add depth at the position. No more resorting to recruit an overmatched Ilya Bryzgalov off his living room couch, as they did last season when Gibson and Jason LaBarbera were injured at the same time.

The plan is to have Khudobin back up Andersen and have Gibson play regularly for their San Diego-based American Hockey League team.

"You always have to show what you can do," Khudobin said. "That's everywhere. You pretty much go and stop the puck. Just win the game.""

Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau expressed confidence in being further fortified in goal.

"He's athletic," Boudreau said. "He plays bigger than his size. He'll come out and he'll challenge you. Just watching the practice today, not too many of them got by him."
