Khudobin makes best of a tough situation

ANAHEIM An upbeat sort, Anton Khudobin sits comfortably in the Ducks dressing room and engages in a conversation with Jakob Silfverberg after he has shed his gear following another practice.

It is the same routine, one the veteran goaltender has done many times this season. But on this Tuesday, Khudobin is parked in a front of a stall that's in another corner of the room from where he used to be. His old stall now has John Gibson's nameplate on it.

It reflects where he is now with the Ducks. A goalie that now minds the net for their American Hockey League team and patiently waits for another NHL shot.

"Just try to stay positive," Khudobin said, managing a slight smile. "That's it. I'm just waiting on what it's going to be."

Khudobin is up with the Ducks now but only because Frederik Andersen was dealing with some back discomfort and wasn't available for Sunday's game against the Kings. Andersen was back at practice Tuesday and might be in position to either start or back up Gibson today against Minnesota.

"Just that he's out there is a very positive note," Ducks coach Bruce Boudreau said.

So Khudobin, 29, might be on the bench tonight or headed back to the San Diego Gulls. After starting the season as the Ducks' backup to Andersen, Khudobin was put on waivers Dec. 13 and then assigned to the Gulls when no other NHL team picked him up.

His last appearance with the Ducks left a bad aftertaste - two goals allowed on five shots in the first 10:39 of a 5-3 win over Calgary. Gibson relieved him that night and then kept the net while Andersen had a lengthy bout with the flu.

With Gibson up for good and the Ducks needing every win they can get, Khudobin was demoted. He knows he's expendable but that his $2.25 million salary-cap figure and the lack of openings around the NHL makes it tough to find a trade partner.

So while he stays in touch with his agent to see if the Ducks can find a new situation for him, Khudobin makes the best of being the odd man out.

"Because you don't want to have three goalies on the team," Khudobin said. "It's a hard situation. In that case, somebody has to go. In my mind, if they're going to find me a place where I can go and play and be on an NHL team, it's great. If not, then I just have to wait until the end of the season."
