Kovalev left his heart in Montreal? // Sun Media

By Bruce Garrioch

OTTAWA -- Alexei Kovalev will get paid to play in Ottawa this season, but you have to wonder if he left his heart in Montreal.

With only two weeks before the Senators report to training camp, the 36-year-old Kovalev, who signed a two-year, $10-million US deal as an unrestricted free agent in July, raised eyebrows when he said yesterday he wouldn't mind finishing his career with the Habs.

"I was disappointed. I thought for sure I'd be staying here," Kovalev told reporters at his charity golf tournament in Montreal. "In the end, I took it from a business point of view. You had a chance to stay here, and you didn't, so you just go and do the job somewhere else.

"I've been back to Montreal four or five times in the last three weeks," he added.

"Everytime you see a fan on the street, (they say) they're really disappointed. That's why I say, maybe after two years I'll be back again. But it's not for me to talk about Montreal -- I'm part of another organization."

Kovalev, who spent the last four seasons the Habs, said he decided to accept the deal with the Senators because they were the only other team to offer a two-year deal.

"We couldn't get any better offer from anybody else," said Kovalev. "Ottawa was kind of the last choice for us. If we didn't sign, we were going to end up someplace else for one year."

Kovalev said he is hopeful Dany Heatley will remain with the Senators.

"It would be nice if (Heatley) stays on the team," he said. "It's definitely not going to be easy in the first couple of months, and maybe the fans aren't going to be on his side, but eventually if he plays well and the team plays well -- if he stays, it would be great. I'm sure the players will back him up a little bit because he's always been important to the club. You definitely have to make it comfortable for him to come back."
