With an abbreviated training camp tentatively scheduled to start Sunday, the Panthers are already trying to shore up their 27th-ranked offense by inviting goal-scoring veterans such as three-time All-Star forward Alex Kovalev, his former linemate Andrei Kostitsyn and Marek Svatos.

Although the Panthers aren't confirming any camp invitations, Kovalev, 39, joined several Panthers at an informal practice Tuesday morning at Glacier Ice and Snow Arena.

"No one has promised me anything," said Kovalev, who has 428 goals and 596 assists in 1,302 regular-season games over 17 NHL seasons for New York, Montreal, Pittsburgh and Ottawa. "They just want me to come in and make the team.

"I can't predict anything. I'm just going to do what I'm able to do, and we'll see how it's going to go."

Kovalev, who's over his knee issues, said the Panthers considered signing him last year before he played 22 games in Russia. He last played in the NHL in 2010-11 for Ottawa and Pittsburgh, where he notched 16 goals in 74 games.

He has 100 points in 123 playoff games, including 21 points in 23 games during the Rangers' Stanley Cup championship run of 1993-94.

"I played against him many times," Kovalev said of Panthers coach Kevin Dineen. "I saw what they did last year, the changes and making the playoffs."

Panthers goalie Jose Theodore, who has played with all three invitees, was impressed with Kovalev's conditioning.

"He's in great shape, and everyone knows his skill level," Theodore said.

Svatos, 30, scored 32 goals in 2005-06 and 26 in 2007-08 with the Avs before concussions and knee injuries derailed his progress.

"He's a speedy little winger with a good snap-shot who has a knack of finding the back of the net," said Sens goalie Craig Anderson, who played with Svatos in Colorado and has been working out at Saveology.com Iceplex.

Kostitsyn, 27, had his best season alongside Kovalev in Montreal in 2007-08 when he notched 26 goals and 27 assists. He, too, has had concussion issues. The left wing has 103 career goals in 398 games.
