Kovalev retires // The Record

RW Alex Kovalev, who had been the last active member of the Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup championship team, quietly announced his retirement Thursday. Kovalev, 40, had two goals and three assists in 14 games for the Panthers after spending last season in the KHL.

Kovalev, who played for the Rangers from 1992-99 and again from 2003-04, had 430 goals and 599 assists in 1,316 NHL games.

28 марта National Post  -  Alexei Kovalev left the team feeling frustrated earlier this month. The 40-year-old quietly filed his retirement papers after a 14-game trial with the Panthers. The team described the outcome as something of a "mutual agreement," but on Sunday in Montreal, Kovalev told reporters he felt the Panthers "started pushing me away."

"In all honesty, it was an understanding before the season that we were going to give him a look," Panthers coach Kevin Dineen said Tuesday. "He came in, and he played fabulous for the first week. He played well and he set a great example for our young players. I can't say enough good things about him."

Kovalev had five points in those 14 games. Dineen, a long-time NHL forward, suggested the pre-season understanding was that the talented Russian could stay if he fit into one of the team's top two scoring lines, and not on its third or fourth line. It was not a fit, Dineen said.

"The hardest thing that ever happened to me was when [my general manager] had to tell me it was time," Dineen said. "And that happened in the middle of a season. I think that happens a lot."

But that does not mean it unfolded exactly according to plan. Not much has this season in Florida. "Whatever's in this dressing room is your team for the night," Gudbranson said. "You've got to look at it that way. There's no excuses."
