These Days, Isles' Kvasha Is Fitting In // New York Times

By DAVE CALDWELL

ALEIGH, N.C., Oct. 27 - The Islanders are playing so well that even Oleg Kvasha appears to be having a good time.

Kvasha, 23, spent much of last season, his first with the Islanders, shrouded in a moody fog. He scored only 11 goals, and the trade that had brought Kvasha and Mark Parrish from Florida to the Islanders for goaltender Roberto Luongo looked like another bust.

But this season Kvasha already has three goals, including the game-tying goal in the Islanders' 3-2 overtime victory Friday over Carolina.

"It seems like his games are getting better and better," Islanders Coach Peter Laviolette said.

Kvasha, a 6-foot-5 left wing from Moscow, has also kept his job on the Islanders' top line, which is centered by Aleksei Yashin. Some of Kvasha's success probably has something to do with Yashin, who has six goals and assisted on the Islanders' last two goals Friday.

Kvasha said his improvement also has something to do with the fact that the Islanders (7-0-1-1) are winning in style. The Islanders, who play host to the Dallas Stars on Sunday afternoon, are 2-0-1-0 in games in which they have trailed going into the third period. They were 1-42-1-2 last season when they trailed after two periods.

"When you win, you always feel better, about the team and yourself," Kvasha said. "Last year, we didn't win so much. It was tough."

To say Yashin is pulling Kvasha along, however, is not quite the situation. Laviolette said that Kvasha had earned his place. Yashin dislikes questions in which he is asked to compare Kvasha's performance this season with that of last season, because Yashin was not with the team.

"He's a great guy, with a great personality, and that's the most important thing to me," Yashin said. "He's very big and strong when it comes to getting pucks up on the boards, and that's important to us. From my perspective, he's enjoying himself."

Sometimes it is still hard to tell. Kvasha seldom smiles. He thinks it is too early in the season to make a pronouncement about his season. He thinks it is better if others judge the way he is playing.

"I guess I just, well, I don't know, try to do my best," he said. "If it goes in, it goes in."

Kvasha sees rough spots. He thinks he ought to shoot the puck more. He has only 16 shots in nine games. His hooking penalty on Sami Kapanen with 11 seconds left in regulation Friday led to a Carolina power play for the first two minutes of overtime.

Kvasha does like being on Yashin's line, and not just because Yashin is also Russian. Yashin, said Kvasha, sees plays develop and can pass the puck well. But Kvasha thinks the line, which includes Mariusz Czerkawski, could do better.

Laviolette is most responsible for hammering home that feeling. He has already said many times this season that he does not want his players to become "fat cats," and that he does not consider any line assignment to be permanent. He has noticed that Kvasha, as an example, has worked hard this year.

"It's maturity," Laviolette said. "He's older, and he's wiser. He's got to play for that position, because there are other people waiting to take it away."

For a time Friday, Czerkawski played on the Islanders' third line, with Brad Isbister replacing him on Yashin's line. Later in the game, Czerkawski was promoted again, and he set up Kvasha on his goal and scored the game winner off a face-off won by Yashin.

"With the team we have right now, it's so great, because we feel we can always come back," Czerkawski said.

Kvasha is helping. Asked if he was a better player, though, Kvasha shrugged, then said: "I don't know. I try to be."
