Rambler's Top100

Markov reaches milestone in Canadiens' rout of Sabres.

Andrei Markov had a simple explanation for his career-high five-point performance against the Buffalo Sabres Friday night.

"Maybe I just got lucky today," Markov said after he contributed a goal and four assists to the Canadiens 7-2 victory.

The points allowed Markov to top 500 points for his career and he said there were times when he thought that such a milestone would be out of reach.

"I'm just grateful to my teammates for supporting me," Markov said.

His defence partner said he wasn't surprised by the milestone. He grabbed the puck when Markov assisted on Max Pacioretty's third-period goal for point No. 500. He finished the night as the team's leading scorer with 10 points and he leads the NHL with a plus-14 rating.

"He's been playing some great hockey and he's always been a great influence on me and a great role model," Subban said. "Today was just another lesson for me."

Markov is two months shy of his 37th birthday, but Subban believes the Russian-Canadian has a lot of hockey left.

"I compare him to Nick Lidstrom," said Subban. "They're very similar. They go a whole night and you don't notice them and then you look at the stat sheet and he's a plus player with a couple of points and between 25 and 29 minutes of ice time. He's just happy to do his job quietly. That's something I've tried to do the last few years, try not to do too much but just be impactful in a way that's going to help our team win. He had five points tonight, but that's exactly the way he's going to play and he may not get five points

but his play is going to result in a win."

This game could have been a lot closer. The Sabres outshot the Canadiens 36-26 and the difference was that backup goaltender Mike Condon was very good for the Canadiens and Chad Johnson wasn't very good for the home side.

"It's always nice to see them put up seven," said Condon, who ran his NHL record to 2-0. "That makes any goalie's job easier when you see an explosion like that."

But Condon had to be at his best in the first period when he stopped 11 shots including some good scoring chances by Tyler Ennis and rookie Jack Eichel.

"It's big," he said of his first period. "You always want to give the guys a chance to get their legs under them in the second period and it just went from there."

Dale Weise and Brendan Gallagher each scored two goals with both of Gallagher's goals coming from the dirty areas in front of the net.

"Both those goals were around the net and I was able to find the puck," said Gallagher. "Marky and (Max Pacioretty) did a great job on my second goal, but any time you put up seven goals, a lot of guys are doing good things."

Gallagher said the Sabres have improved from last season when they had the worst record in the NHL.

"They come at you with a lot of speed and if we turned it over, they made us pay," said Gallagher. "Condo made some big saves for us, especially early on."

The Canadiens went two for three on the power play and it's the second time in three games that the Canadiens have scored two power play goals. When Subban was asked whether the power play has turned the corner, he fell back on the onegame-at-a-time philosophy and said the Canadiens have to keep working on getting better.

And that brings us back to what Markov has planned for that sou venir.

"Maybe I'll sell it," he said with a smile.
