Perhaps it's not realistic to believe Aleksey Morozov should be a high-impact forward at this stage of his career. 

Sure, he has nice size (6 feet 1, 196 pounds), good speed and a hard shot, but Morozov won't turn 23 until Feb. 16. He's been in North America for fewer than three years. And he rarely gets a chance to work with highly skilled linemates. 

All of those factors have conspired against him becoming a star. 

But they don't begin to explain why Morozov has scored just one goal in his past 26 games. 

Morozov clearly is perplexed by his drought - as is nearly everyone else in the Penguins' organization - and doesn't try to hide how he is troubled by it. 

"It's so bad," he said yesterday. "I'm so nervous about it. I can't score, probably, because I'm nervous." 

Morozov will get another chance to regain his touch when Anaheim visits Mellon Arena at 7:38 tonight. 

He sat out the Penguins' 4-1 victory against Atlanta Thursday after injuring his back while stretching before the game - "I pulled down, then back, and I couldn't move," he said - but practiced yesterday and plans to be in uniform tonight, even though his back hurt at times during the workout. 

Morozov, who skated on a line with center Robert Lang and left winger Matthew Barnaby yesterday, has six goals and 11 assists in 39 games this season, placing him ninth among the Penguins. 

"He's way more talented than his statistics [indicate]," Barnaby said. "If people look at his stats, they probably don't think he's as good of a player as he really is." 

Lackluster as Morozov's numbers are, they become even less impressive considering he got three of those goals during a span of seven minutes, 12 seconds in the second game of the season. 

That rampage against New Jersey's Martin Brodeur, arguably the NHL's finest goalie, reinforced the belief that Morozov has the talent to become an elite forward. That Morozov has gotten only three goals in the interim underscores how his promise has not translated into productivity. 

"He has some real good individual skills, and some potential," Coach Herb Brooks said. "I'm underlining 'potential.' I think that's where he's at." 

Morozov's potential has intrigued NHL scouts and executives for years. Three winters ago, he was routinely referred to in hockey circles as "the best player in the world who's not in the NHL." 

Morozov doesn't receive such effusive praise anymore, but he still has some strong supporters in Penguins management. People who envision him as a 40-goal man someday. 

The snag is, after 182 games in the league, Morozov has scored just 28. That works out to one goal every 6 1/2 games and projects to a 13-goal pace over 82 games. 

There's little question Morozov's personal stats suffer because he is the Penguins' No. 3 right winger, behind Jaromir Jagr and Alexei Kovalev. That limits his ice time - he's averaging about 14 1/2 minutes per game - and denies him the opportunity to work with their most gifted centers and left wingers. 

Still, the prevailing sentiment inside the organization seems to be that Morozov's inner drive to succeed will be the defining variable in his career. That if he's willing to sweat and sacrifice every time he steps onto the ice, the goals and assists will follow. 

"It's not like he's not getting opportunities or that there are other variables that are not in his control [to prevent] him from reaching his potential," Brooks said. "He's getting ice time, he's getting opportunities. He's got to reach down, move his legs, pay the price, do things to drive himself to the next plateau." 

When Brooks replaced Kevin Constantine as coach Dec. 9, Morozov figured to be one of the players who benefited most from the change. 

For while Constantine dramatically upgraded Morozov's defensive play, his highly structured system appeared to stifle Morozov's creativity. Morozov, though, has just one goal and seven assists in 22 games under Brooks. 

So far, Morozov has sparkled only in spurts, offering rare, tantalizing glimpses of the level he can reach when all the elements of his game are in sync. 

"When he's playing his game, actually grinding it out a bit and playing a little more physical, he's really a great player," Barnaby said. "He's highly skilled, and when he adds that little dimension, he's even more dangerous." 

What Morozov might have to prove in coming weeks is that he's more valuable as a winger than as trade bait. If the Penguins, around whom so much speculation is swirling, decide to make a major personnel move, Morozov is one of the few players they have who could bring a significant return. 

"I hope they aren't ready to give up on him," Barnaby said. "I know we haven't given up on him." 

Management appears to share that perspective, at least for now, and both sides stand to benefit if Morozov rediscovers his scoring touch during the final two-plus months of the regular season. 

Getting some goals from Morozov would ease the pressure on their other skilled forwards and establish the third line as a legitimate offensive threat. Morozov, meanwhile, could enhance his bargaining power in the contract talks he'll go through during the coming off-season. 

Clearly, his work during the stretch drive could be pivotal for the Penguins. And even more important for Morozov. 

"When you give people who have potential an opportunity, it's up to them to bring forth that potential," Brooks said. "His future's in his own hands."

Морозов получил травму в четверг при столкновении с защитником "Лос-Анжелес Кингз" Брэдом Веренка в третьем периоде матча Лос-Анжелес - Питтсбург.  

Констэнтин не скрывал своего огорчения: "Он один из приятных сюрпризов (этого сезона). Для него это третий год и, как обычно бывает для таких игроков, он поднял свою игру на абсолютно новый уровень." 

22-х летний россиянин забросил 3 шайбы и сделал 3 передачи в 8 играх и с +6 делил первое место в команде перед субботним матчем против Сан-Хосе.

"Пингвинз" верят в талант Морозова 

По словам Яромира Ягра, глядя на 22-летнего нападающего Алексея Морозова, он видит исключительный талант и большой потенциал. Но в первые два сезона в НХЛ в игре Морозова лишь иногда проскальзовали намёки на огромные возможности. Однако Ягр сказал, что Морозов намного лучше его, когда он сам был в таком возрасте, потому что Алексей знает как переносить неудачи. "По сравнению с ним я был злой всё время, . . . я кричал, я плакал". " 

Честно говоря, очень трудно обвинить Морозова в малом количестве результативных очков, так как его время на льду было ограничено (11 минут, 50 секунд за матч в сезоне 1998-99) и к тому же он много не играл в прошлом сезоне из-за многочисленных сотрясений, последствия который похоже осталисть позади. "Я не думаю об этом, "- сказал Морозов. " В июне у меня были головные боли, но в июле я почувствовал себя лучше и приступил к тренеровкам." 

Сейчас перед российским нападающим стоит задача приспособиться к системе игры тренера Кэна Констэнтина. Алексей всегда был ярко выраженным форвардом, но теперь Констэнтин хочет, чтобы он стал двухсторонним хоккеистом. "У него не много игрового времени и они хотят чтобы он играл в защите," - сказал Ягр. "Молодые игроки обязанны выполнять указания тренеров. Они говорят ему играть в защите, так как же он может забивать голы? Это очень трудно." 

В эти первые две недели тренеровочного сбора, Констэнтин заметил значительные улучшения в игре Морозова: "Он становится хорошим игроком оборонительного плана. . . Я думаю, он начинает понимать значимость быть двухсторонним игроком. . . Будем надеется, что мы сможем использовать Лёшу на различных позициях в этом году. С его талантом, мы могли бы попробовать дать ему шанс играть при игре в меньшенстве, что обычно вы не стали бы делать с малоопытными хоккеистами." 

По словам того же Констэнтина, Морозов получил незаменимый багаж знаний в прошлых двух сезонах и должен знать, что нужно делать для успеха. Сам Морозов признаёт, что ему нужно сыграть лушче, чем в прошлые два сезона, но для этого ему нужно игровое время. Присутствие в команде Ягра и Ковалёва уменьшает шансы Алексея на его заметное увеличение.  

"Яромир получает огромное количесто ударов стараясь защитить шайбу и он может играть в обороне. (Ковалёв) большой, сильный парень, любящий находиться на "пяточке" перед воротами и в середине физической игры. Именно это и разделяет этих игроков от него (Морозова) на сегодняшний день. . . Он должен бросаться в пасть к волкам, идя к воротам, пытаясь забить гол и бороться за шайбу в углах площадки," - сказал тренер. 

"Это определит как далеко он пойдёт. Если он готов к физической борьбе, у него неограниченный потенциал," - добавил Констэнтин.По материалам "Пост-Газетт" (Питтсбург)
