Orlov breaks arm playing for Russi.
14.05.2014. The Washington Post. Carrera, Katie.

Capitals defenseman Dmitry Orlov  suffered a broken left arm Monday during Russia's preliminary round game against the United States in the IIHF World Championships, according to multiple reports.

The Capitals confirmed that Orlov, 22, will travel to Washington from Belarus, where the tournament is being held, to meet with team medical personnel and athletic trainers for further evaluation of the injury. It's unknown if the blue-liner will need surgery.

It's an unfortunate situation for Orlov, who earned significant playing time (19:35 average per game) and a regular place in the Capitals' top four while appearing in 54 NHL games this season. This year was an important step forward for the defenseman after he spent the majority of the 2012-13 season sidelined by two concussions.

The injury also adds another offseason wrinkle for Washington, which is in a state of flux as it searches for a general manager and coach. While it's impossible to predict the makeup of the team heading in to training camp without knowing who will fill those key roles, Orlov would be expected to hold a spot on the NHL roster - if he's recovered by then.
