When he arrives, Plotnikov will be free to make his own living arrangements. But Rutherford said the Penguins have a Russian support group assembled in case Plotnikoff needs help with the transition. Rutherford also is excited to watch Evgeni Malkin go from mentee to mentor, comparing this opportunity to when Malkin broke into the league and lived with defenseman Sergei Gonchar. "It will give (Malkin) an additional opportunity for leadership," Rutherford said. "I think that will be good for him." Plotnikoff (6-foot-2, 205 pounds) is a big-bodied forward who scored 15 goals in the KHL last season. This past spring, he and Malkin won silver at the IIHF World Championships.
