'Poni' up for Devs //

Alexei Ponikarovsky was an integral part of the Devils' run to the Stanley Cup Finals last spring, so there evidently was no reason to ease him back into the rotation. Ponikarovsky, who was reacquired from Winnipeg for two draft picks Wednesday night after Dainius Zubrus underwent wrist surgery, started out on New Jersey's first line

alongside Travis Zajac and Ilya Kovalchuk

for Friday night's game against the Flyers at the Rock in Newark.

"It's up to the coaches and management to see where they want me to fit in," Ponikarovsky said beforehand. "I know Dainius is out for some time, but it's not about replacing him.

"It's just one of those things where I bring my game and the coaches will decide where I fit best. They see I can bring some size, battle in the corners and go to the net and make it easier for those guys."

Ponikarovsky, 32, totaled seven goals and 18 points in 33 games for the Devils last season following a midseason trade from Carolina. The 6-4 winger added nine points and a plus-8 rating in the playoffs before signing with the Jets as an unrestricted free agent. The versatile Zubrus is expected to miss 4-to-6 weeks after undergoing surgery on his left wrist. "Zubie leaves a big hole for us," coach Peter DeBoer said. "Maybe not on the stat sheet, but on the penalty-kill and along the boards. Really, he's one of the identity players on our team, how we want to play. "So being able to find a replica of (Zubrus) was high on the list when he went down. I think that's as close as you can get with Poni." With Ponikarovsky's arrival, first-round pick Stefan Matteau went from the top line to the scratch list. Defenseman Henrik Tallinder also was a healthy scratch.
