Varlamov is providing a scoring spark. // Post-Dispatch

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Midway through the third period with the score tied 3-3, Blues winger Sergei Varlamov dashed into Minnesota's zone and frantically whacked his stick against the ice.

Translation: Give it here ... Give it here ... Give it here, now!

Dallas Drake, battling along the boards, sent the puck to Varlamov's slapping stick. Varlamov got off a wrist shot.

But it didn't hit net like his previous shot had.

Still, it shows that Varlamov, a 23-year-old Ukrainian winger, has become a spark on the Blues' scoring lines, showing the offensive crackle that produced six points in four scrimmages during training camp. He has been, mostly, split-shifting on the Blues' top line with Keith Tkachuk and Pavol Demitrain recent games.

On Sunday, again starting off on the Blues' fourth line and then surging to the top line, Varlamov also played with center Doug Weight on the second scoring line. Varlamov was on a blended line when he fired in the Blues' second goal of the evening and his third of the season.

"Every time you put him out there, he's been effective," coach Joel Quenneville said. "He's starting to find that confidence in his play. ... His workload will increase as his play continues like that."

Varlamov, acquired in the trade with Calgary that sent Roman Turek there and brought Fred Brathwaite to St. Louis, had a string of seven consecutive healthy scratches earlier.

Now he has been a part of the Blues' five-game unbeaten run.

"It's great to finally get time some ice time, especially with two of the best players," Varlamov said. "When I get out there, I try to get to the puck, try to make a play. ... Coach must have thought I had good jump so I had to go and work hard."
