By Eric Strongren. Predators defenseman Anton Volchenkov has a knack for putting his body on the line to block shots. "It sometimes hurts, but it's a good hurt," he said. After blocking 91 shots last season in New Jersey, Volchenkov signed a one-year contract with the Predators this summer and is playing that gritty style on a pairing with Seth Jones. The Moscow native has over 600 games of NHL experience compared to Jones' one full season, and they have 12 combined blocked shots heading into Friday night's game at Winnipeg. "I find myself blocking more shots playing with him, to be honest, and it kind of rubs off on you," Jones said. "He's very definitive in his play. Very straightforward. Keeps it simple and is very good in his own zone." Volchenkov, who played the last four seasons in New Jersey, believes shot blocking is a necessary role in winning games. He scouts opposing player's shooting styles and studies those moves so he can be in the best possible positions. The hardest shot he's ever absorbed? That would be a puck off the stick of Boston's Zdeno Chara, Volchenkov said. Volchenkov, 32, said he's feeling good so far with the Predators and likes the friendly nature of his teammates. He called Jones a "very skilled" player and complimented his work ethic in games. Beyond blocking shots, Volchenkov has shown an ability do deliver heavy hits with his 6-foot-1, 220-pound frame. He leads the Predators with 11 hits and is disruptive defending in the corners behind goalie Pekka Rinne. That style gives Jones opportunities to play with a more offensive mindset. "Whenever I jump, I know he's usually back," Jones said. "So that's nice for me to know that safety net is there." On Thursday, Predators head coach Peter Laviolette said the team is fine with the defensive pairings and said the two played strong in the season-opening victories against Ottawa and Dallas. "Generally speaking, I thought most of our guys were pretty good the first two games and we want to get back on that path of how we're playing the game," Laviolette said. |
