Yashin steals the show
By BRUCE GARRIOCH -- Ottawa Sun
Wayne Gretzky is still the Great One, but Alexei Yashin was
The One last night.
On the night holdout hero Daniel Alfredsson made his return to
the Senators lineup against Gretzky and the New York Rangers, it was Yashin
who took the spotlight in front of 17,111 at the Corel Centre.
Alfredsson didn't disappoint, counting two assists in his debut,
but Yashin showed this could be his breakthrough year with his first two
goals of the season in a 5-1 Ottawa win over the Rangers.
Yashin, 24, who had little to show for his efforts in the first
six games of the season, went into the game wanting to shoot the puck more.
That ended up being bad news for Rangers' backup goalie Jason Muzzatti.
"Sometimes you have to shoot from more difficult angles because
the goalie doesn't expect it," said Yashin, who scored on a bullet from
the point at 10:54 of the second and added another in the third.
"It's good for the confidence. We had a lot of chances in the
past and the last couple of games we've been able to come up with six goals
as a line. It's good to score the goals, but I think I also got a little
lucky."
Luck had nothing to do with this. Yashin made every break he
got against the Rangers. Had it not been for a blown call by Lance Roberts
on a delayed penalty in the first, Yashin would have been celebrating a
hat-trick.
Yashin came on the ice as the extra attacker and flipped his
own rebound by Muzzatti at 18:24. However, Roberts called back the goal
because he believed the Rangers' netminder froze the puck on the initial
save. In the end, it didn't matter.
"(Yashin) should have had three. He's playing great hockey,"
said Ottawa defenceman Jason York. "He's really making things happen out
there.
"On the trip to the West Coast, he was moving guys out of the
way. I think having (Alfredsson) back can only help him. It's going to
open up some more ice for him. They can't just have guys key on Yashin."
When the Rangers did get their chances, Ottawa goalie Ron Tugnutt
was there to save the day. He stopped 28-of-29 shots, but made his best
stops in the second period with New York pressing to get back into the
game.
"When they score a couple of goals in front of me that makes
me feel a lot better," said Tugnutt. "When they do that, hopefully I can
make save or two so they feel that Tugger is back there for us."
It was a classic "team win" over a tough and talented team. Along
with the goaltending and play of Yashin, the forwards created chances,
and the defence chipped in with goals from Lance Pitlick and Wade Redden.
