Zherdev, Berard told to take a seat // The Columbus Dispatch

NEW YORK ? Personal, or personnel, messages were delivered before the Blue Jackets? morning skate yesterday in Madison Square Garden. Winger Nikolai Zherdev and defenseman Bryan Berard were told they would not be playing against the New York Rangers.

Forward Geoff Platt was flown in from Syracuse of the American Hockey League to take Zherdev?s place. Aaron Johnson took Berard?s place in the lineup.

One case at a time:

Zherdev skipped a mandatory postgame workout after the Jackets? 4-0 loss Thursday to the Edmonton Oilers in Nationwide Arena. It?s a benchable offense.

"He?s a healthy scratch (against the Rangers) and he?ll be back against Nashville (tonight)," coach Ken Hitchcock said. "He missed a mandatory postgame exercise. Everyone else knows to be there. Everyone else was there. He?s part of this team. There?s no excuse."

Berard has no goals, three assists and a minus-5 rating since he returned to the lineup Jan. 31. Berard, coming off two back surgeries, missed the first 51 games of the season. He?s on the trading block.

"Bryan is struggling, which can be expected when you come back from a significant injury," Hitchcock said. "He?s not playing as we would hope or as he would hope."

Berard conceded as much, but he added that the scratch still came as a surprise.

"I definitely don?t want to be out of the lineup," he said. "The competitor that I am, it?s tough to take. Basically, what it comes down to is I?m trying to play well, but I don?t have that confidence where it should be, especially coming back from the injury. I?m struggling, and I?m not getting the ice time to get out of the funk."

Berard has averaged 19 minutes, 25 seconds since his return.
