Khudobin, 35, was waived by the Stars on Monday afternoon and went unclaimed by the other 31 teams.

Stars goaltender Anton Khudobin cleared waivers Tuesday afternoon and was assigned to AHL affiliate Texas.

Khudobin, 35, was waived by the Stars on Monday afternoon and went unclaimed by the other 31 teams in the NHL, freeing Dallas to send him to the AHL. Khudobin has not played since Nov. 18 and has been a healthy scratch in each of the last eight games.

Khudobin is signed with Dallas through the end of next season at a cap hit of $3.333 million. Even though he is no longer on the NHL roster, he will still count $2.208 million towards the Stars’ salary cap. According to the collective bargaining agreement, teams can only bury $1.125 million in the minors this season.

That Khudobin was not claimed is not surprising.

His contract is a deterrent, as is his performance this season. In seven games played, he has a .873 save percentage and 3.73 goals against average. Both are the worst in his career, and his save percentage is second-worst in the NHL among goalies with seven games played.

Of course, there is also the fact that Khudobin has not played in nearly a month. According to a source, teams have contacted the Stars about acquiring Khudobin, but would like to see him play more games.

The Stars could still trade Khudobin, but his value is minimal at the moment, as evidenced by him going through waivers unclaimed. If Dallas did trade Khudobin, they might have to attach an asset like a draft pick or retain salary in order to get something in return.

In Cedar Park, Khudobin with join Adam Scheel and Colton Point. Since Jake Oettinger was recalled to Dallas and remained in the NHL, Scheel has gotten most of the work in the AHL net, starting six games to Point’s three.

Khudobin’s spot on the depth chart does not change despite the transactions in the last two days. He is still the No. 3 goalie in the organization behind Braden Holtby and Jake Oettinger. Instead of being a healthy scratch in the NHL, he’ll be playing games in the AHL.

“We’re certainly not ruling [out] him coming back,” Stars coach Rick Bowness said. “He’s still a part of the organization. Is there a chance he could come back and play? Absolutely. So, we haven’t closed the door on that. We’re trying to get him playing and get him back on top of his game.”
